Using ChatGPT to help with SEO

Introduction

Let’s jump on the hype train with ChatGPT before it’s too late. Arguably we are already passed the Turing station so let’s hop on and see what we can learn.

ChatGPT is a variant of OpenAI’s GPT (Generative Pre-training Transformer) language processing model, specifically designed for dialog systems. It is capable of generating human-like responses in a conversation. Give it a prompt or context and get a human like response. ChatGPT is trained on a large dataset of human-human conversations and has the ability to generate a diverse range of natural and fluid responses.

You can apparently use ChatGPT for anything you want so let’s start by asking ChatGPT about its abilities.

In this article I am going to test OpenAI’s chatbot to see if it can help me with SEO.

Using ChatGPT for SEO

First of all let’s check if it knows what SEO is about.

OK, it passed the first test with a great explanation – a very straight forward answer.

Now I am going to ask its opinion on how can it help me with SEO.

With this great answer I’m almost convinced that it can do it all, but let’s go further and test that theory.

Next, I asked it to provide some relevant keywords for a Software company website.

Here are some relevant keywords that a software company might want to consider targeting for SEO:

  1. Software development
  2. Software design
  3. Software engineering
  4. Software testing
  5. Software maintenance
  6. Software project management
  7. Agile software development
  8. Scrum software development
  9. Custom software development
  10. Software as a service (SaaS)
  11. Cloud-based software
  12. Mobile app development
  13. Artificial intelligence software
  14. Machine learning software
  15. Data analytics software

By incorporating these keywords into the content and meta tags of your website, you can help improve its visibility and ranking in search results for these terms. It’s important to keep in mind that the specific keywords you should target will depend on the products and services your company offers, as well as the specific audience you are trying to reach.

Google Search Console with ChatGPT

My next curiosity is if it knows how to handle Google Search Console, a pretty major tool for SEO.

Now that we know it is aware of what Google Search Console is, let’s ask it if it knows how to index a page with this tool.

How to index a page with Google Search Console?

To index a page with Google Search Console, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Google Search Console website (https://search.google.com/search-console) and sign in with your Google account.
  2. Select the property (website) that you want to add the page to.
  3. In the left-hand menu, click on “URL inspection.”
  4. In the text field that appears, enter the URL of the page that you want to index.
  5. Click on the “Inspect” button.
  6. Google will show you the current status of the page, as well as any issues that might be preventing it from being indexed.
  7. If the page is not indexed, you can try to request that it be indexed by clicking on the “Request indexing” button. This will submit the page to Google for crawling and indexing.

Keep in mind that it may take some time for the page to be indexed, and there is no guarantee that it will be indexed. Google will only index pages that it considers to be of high quality and that are relevant to its users.

Overall, using Google Search Console can help you monitor and improve your website’s performance in Google search results.

Once again an amazing answer by ChatGPT. It seems that by now everything that I asked it, it had  provided a very precise explanation for what I needed to find out.

Generate meta descriptions with ChatGPT

The next question that I have: Can it create a meta description for a page that I will provide, because if it can do that, it will be pretty useful, am I right?

I will go and copy the URL from ideahub.ro and I will tell ChatGPT to generate a meta description for this page.

Would you look at that? Amazing, it has just generated an unique meta description and besides that, it has also explained it.

Optimize text with ChatGPT

Until now, this engine has proved to me that it is dangerously smart. Let’s see if he can optimize a piece of text from www.ideahub.ro.

So I will just go and pick a piece of text from the homepage, the one in the image below, and I will place it in the ChatGPT’s chat.

Let’s jump to the results.

Here is a possible version of the text optimized for SEO:

“Looking for a reliable software development team with a proven track record of satisfied clients? Look no further! Our experienced, agile team is dedicated to delivering against each unique requirement through transparent communication and close collaboration with our clients and their internal teams. As a self-managed team of problem solvers, we thrive on challenging projects and enjoy researching and finding the best solutions to meet the specific needs and goals of our customers.”

Here are some ways that this text has been optimized for SEO:

  • Included relevant keywords, such as “software development team,” “reliable,” “proven track record,” “satisfied clients,” “agile team,” “unique requirements,” “transparent communication,” “self-managed,” and “problem solvers.”
  • Made the text more actionable and specific by using phrases such as “look no further” and “dedicated to delivering.”

-Make the text more reader-friendly by using shorter sentences, and separate ideas.

-Make the text sound like the brand is solution oriented and client oriented.

Please keep in mind that SEO optimization is a constantly changing practice and search engines are always adapting to new algorithms, it’s important to regularly update your website and check for best SEO practices.

Love the soft note at the end. Spoken like a true expert: nothing is absolute unless it’s obsolete. This was just a small example of how ChatGPT can help tackle everyday tasks. The possibilities are endless it seems and it’s the greatest mixture of scary and exciting times!
